The Gymnasium
in partnership with Doug PattersonA healthy activity that has increased in the last few years is the pursuit of fitness and in parallel to the euphoria for fitness and the proliferation of remote working, came the need to adapt our homes, building gyms and offices in our gardens.
The GYMNASIUM is a state-of-the-art personal training space, built within a private residential estate in the Caribbean.
The building is conceived as a minimalist transparent volume dominating from the top of the hill, the magnificent views towards the sea and the nearby islands.
The training level cantilevers over the cliff, supported by concrete gallows, create a levitating sensation over nature.
A clean and transparent architecture, simple details, a palette of natural materials, the integral windowing, and lighting scenes, all collaborate to integrate the external views in the interior, which, reflected in the mirrored walls, extend the visual perspectives into the interior, ad infinitum.
Access to the gym from the main house and guest houses is via a funicular or by “mule” (small island vehicle). The layout is connected to the existing trails on two levels, either the undercroft level or the training level. The undercroft level is recessed and houses the changing room, sauna, and plant.
The exuberance of tropical nature in the landscape treatment is allowed in by the transparency of the building skin, achieving a very direct exterior-interior integration. The Lutron lighting system allows the creation of different “moods” for arrival, preparation, training, and subsequent relaxation with a full bar at your disposal.
Meticulous attention to detail design helped to create a minimalist aesthetic that lives peacefully and quietly within the lush tropical landscaping.
The angular shape of the undercroft is revealed at night by careful and subtle lighting.
The glass façade was designed to be hurricane-proof, without compromising views of the ocean and landscape, while integrating the magnificent environment into the training space and creating a unique gymnastics experience.
When the terrain is dramatic, with steep slopes and breath-taking views, architecture is called to integrate as an observer, accompanying and reflecting the natural environment.
